It was on Memorial Day in 2012, that I raised the question of the Cardinal’s final resting place to him. Cardinal George was well aware of the beautiful and historic Bishop’s mausoleum located in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, but as was his custom, he also wanted to be respectful of his family and of a desire to be near them in death. It was clear that this was an important decision to him and that was reflected in an article that he wrote for the Catholic New World a few weeks later. Cardinal George was extremely proud of our Archdiocesan cemetery system and was eternally grateful for the way his grandparents were being cared for in Calvary Cemetery in Evanston and of his parents at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.

One of the greatest gifts that God has given to all of humankind is “the gift of memory”. In the sacred words of Eucharistic Consecration we hear the words of Jesus say to us, “do this in memory of me”. To remember someone is both a blessed and cherished moment.
