Ideas for Celebrating Valentine's Day and National Marriage Week

Are you struggling for ideas for Valentine’s Day like I am? Since my wife Marilyn’s birthday is on Christmas, and somehow feels like an afterthought each year, I try to come up with something special for her each February 14. The volunteer from our Family Ministries Office, Jeane Quentin, has come up with some good ideas for making Valentine’s Day special:

Five Ways To Get In the Mood for Married Couples

  1. De-stress. Forget about work problems or the kids and focus on your husband or wife.
  2. For the ladies (and guys too): don’t allow yourself to be negative about your body. Focus on all the things you like about you and he likes about you.
  3. Go with the flow. If you don’t have much time, make it quick and exciting. If you have more time, create a romantic atmosphere and take things slow.
  4. Remember the old days. Think back to your favorite romantic moments with your husband or wife and remind them why it was so great.
  5. Surprise your spouse. Whether it’s more thoughtfulness than usual or a romantic outfit, try to shake things up.

Pope John Paul II’s Theology of the Body remind us that we are made to be gifts for each other. Since Valentine’s Day falls on Sunday this year, why not start the day off right? Attend Mass together, and then talk about how your faith has played a role in your marriage. It was the late Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen who wrote in his book Three to Get Married that Jesus Christ is the third party that is welcomed into marriage by the couples. How has Jesus Christ been a partner so far? And what can we do to make our faith a more integral part of our marriage?

Then pick one of Jeane’s five suggestions and show your spouse how much you care! National Marriage Week is every February 7-14. You can get other ideas to celebrate it at www.nationalmarriageweekusa.org or check out the National Marriage Day website sponsored by Worldwide Marriage Encounter at wmd.wwme.org.
