Amate House Honors Its 2009-2010 Volunteers At Navy Pier

I am Deacon John Lucas, Executive Director of Amate House, father of four children and the grandfather of 12 beautiful grandchildren. Amate House is a young adult volunteer program serving the needs of many in various capacities throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago.  This year we have 36 Volunteers who live in community in three different areas of the City of Chicago. They work at many different not-for-profit sites in varying capacities such as teaching, mentoring, social service agencies and health agencies. The diversification of the sites is truly amazing. Amate House will contribute over 64,000 hours of service with a value of over $1,200,000.00 for one year of service from 36 Volunteers. One of the more important aspects of the Amate House experience is the life-changing transformation of our Volunteers. Through Community, Service, Social Justice, Stewardship and Faith Formation each Volunteer takes a journey that changes their life and experiences growth in maturity, knowledge, understanding, compassion and the power of God’s love.

Working at Amate House these past five years has given me a chance to assist many great young people as they maneuver their way through life.  I believe we all have a responsibility to our young adults to be there for them and to share our life experiences with them.  Amate House can boast that 75% of its 550 alumni are still engaged in the human/social services field. Many go about their daily lives living the Gospel and spreading the Good News by their example.

While Amate House is an agency of the Archdiocese we do not rely on any funds from them. Each Volunteer receives a monthly living allowance, health insurance, food, shelter and transportation to and from their work site.  Our major fund raising event of the year, Amate Magic, allows us to sustain their work.

On Friday, April 30th, Amate House will celebrate its 26th year with our Gala, Amate Magic, at Navy Pier. Allison Rosati, Anchor on Channel 5 News, will graciously serve as our celebrity host. We are expecting more than 400 guests who will enjoy a memorable evening as we showcase our Volunteers. We are again blessed to have such a great group of young adults in our Program. They are all college graduates from across the country representing several major universities and colleges.

If you, or someone you know who will graduate next year, are looking for a meaningful experience, visit our web site www.amatehouse.org or call 773-376-2445.  Additional information and an application are available. We are happy to be able to share with you that we are at capacity for the 2010-2011 year.  If you are interested in becoming a part of this great organization either as a board member or a donor, please do not hesitate to contact us.  We are always looking for invigorating and enthusiastic people interested in helping others to help those less fortunate.
