Because you’re a faithful Catholic and committed parishioner, you’ve been asked or might be asked to assume a leadership role in your parish. Feeling intimidated?
You can find the confidence, support and information you need at the Archdiocesan Office for Councils’ Parish Leadership Day on Feb. 23. There you’ll join more than 1,500 fellow Catholics facing similar challenges, and finding surprising rewards as they live out their Baptismal call to service.
Since 1984, Parish Leadership Day has offered lay leaders, parish volunteers and staff a wide variety of workshops that outline issues and problems parishes typically face and offer ways others have successfully addressed them. Presenters can help you effectively run meetings, recruit volunteers, maintain your parish school, and reach out to parishioners in need.
Leadership Day workshops offer you ways to bolster your understanding of the faith. This year’s theme is “Encountering the Living Christ in the Eucharist: We Gather, Share, Worship and Are Sent.” It highlights the Archdiocese’s Strategic Plan focus this year, which is the Year of Sunday Mass. Expert presenters will delve into history, scripture, symbolism and song elements of Mass. At day’s end, you can participate in Mass celebrated by Cardinal Francis George.
A third type of workshop routinely part of Leadership Day emphasizes the Church’s role in the wider world. Cardinal George will lead an afternoon session on the recent Roman Synod on the New Evangelization, linking it to the universal Church’s Year of Faith and the Archdiocese’s theme of Sunday Mass. Other workshops will address the Church’s stance on immigration, ways to become missionary disciples, the Church and healthcare, and local efforts to mitigate the violence in our streets and in our homes.
The day’s schedule, including more than 100 workshops in English, Spanish and Polish and keynotes by author David B. Currie and Rev. Marco Mercado, is available online at www.archchicago.org and click on the Parish Leadership Day icon at the top of the page.
