Mission

In order to have the ‘voice’ of the varied Catholic Asian population (about 4.5%) in our Archdiocese heard, the Office of Asian Catholics provides the opportunity for Cardinal George and our local Church, as is possible, to listen to and respond to the strengths, challenges and needs of these diverse communities. The Catholic Asian population includes immigrants and refugees from the Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, India, Japan, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand and Sri-Lanka. The Office is responsible for implementing the Archdiocese of Chicago's mission and vision of a multi-cultural Church. In addition, as an agency in the Department of Evangelization, Catechesis, and Worship, this Office enriches the other 17 Office Directors with a deepened awareness and sensitivity to and for the Asian communities in our midst.

This “Being Asian” is best discovered and affirmed not in confrontation and opposition, but in the spirit of complementarity and harmony. In this framework of complementarity and harmony, the Church can communicate the Gospel in a way that is faithful both to her own tradition and to
the Asian soul.
