Description:

Job available March 28, 2016. This is a full-time, benefits eligible position which should not exceed 38 hours per week, unless there is a critical need to do so. The normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday 7:00am-3:00pm, with a half hour unpaid lunch. The Head of maintenance reports to the pastor. Works in cooperation with other employees and especially with church maintenance personnel as well as supervise their work when necessary. Needs to be familiar with several aspects of maintenance and repair procedures, including plumbing, electrical, machinery, carpentry, and other maintenance functions. Responsible for the routine maintenance, upkeep and safety of the entire parish complex, both inside and out. The main overall job responsibilities are as follows (this list is broad in scope and is not exhaustive of all duties the job includes ): 1)Do a daily walk-through of the buildings and grounds to ensure everything is clean, in working condition, and is attended to. Check all buildings for needed general maintenance, cleanliness, safety and security. Attend to any problems in regards to the above. 2)Throw away garbage from the rectory, including the offices and residence of the priests. 3)Check parish hall before and after events and empty garbage, clean up papers or put furniture in place as needed. 4)Arrange furniture for meetings as requested by parish staff. 5)Address and correct daily problems such as plumbing, electrical, security and heating needs, unless professional service is required. 6) Be in constant consultation/communication with pastor and business manager regarding all maintenance/capital issues, especially those requiring outside contractors (boilers, roof, etc.) 7)Contact Pastor or business manager immediately if professional service is needed and contact vendors if designated. 8)Be in contact with the engineer of public school about any problems there especially relating to heat, plumbing or electricity and speak to pastor/business manager about how to proceed. 9)Every Monday morning, check the bathrooms of the school building to make sure they are clean after weekend parish events and that all toilets are working. 10)Purchase supplies, tools, and other items needed for parish repairs or parish projects. 11)Do other “handyman” projects as needed and requested (e.g., painting, installing a shelf, floor sanding, etc.). 12)Maintain equipment (e.g., snow removal machines, vacuum cleaners, etc.). 13)Maintain boiler and air conditioning systems to your ability, and calling qualified, Archdiocesan approved contractors for service when needed. This especially includes making sure chemicals for boilers are working and at proper levels, needing to daily/weekly/monthly check them. 14) Do special inspections of the grounds as needed, following the Archdiocese Maintenance Manual, to ensure that all buildings and equipment are in working condition and follow through the with repairs, cleaning or whatever is needed to keep everything in working condition (including, but not limited to: changing batteries in smoke detectors, cleaning gutters of rectory and garages, boilers, air conditioning system, concrete, ceilings, walls, etc.) 15)Keep all sidewalks around the church (Fairfield, Washtenaw and 63rd), walkways, office entrances, and church stairs and entrances clear of snow and kept salted every time it snows or is icy in the winter. 16) Picking up deliveries and orders when needed (e.g., food deliveries, Sam’s pickups, etc.) 17)In the absence of the Church Maintenance Worker, prepare church for funerals. 18)Supervise maintenance volunteers and community service people, as well as any service people and contractors (e.g., boiler repair, plumbers, exterminators). Other tasks as needed or requested when within your job responsibilities.

Requirements:

High school graduate (preferred), plus technical education or equivalent of a minimum 3 years documented experience in a maintenance related field. Trade license or technical college preferred. Must have a functional understanding of electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems. Knowledge of relevant OSHA, Building, Fire, Life, and Safety Codes. Ability and knowledge of gauges, measurements, and proper use of tools. Highly motivated, well-organized, good problem solving skills, effective as a team builder and able to coordinate multi and changing priorities. Must be available for on-site emergencies 24/7. Pay is commensurate with experience. The person must be able to lift/push at least 50 lbs., have a valid driver’s license and daily access to a car/van, and climb ladders and stairs as necessary. The ideal candidate would be bilingual (English and Spanish).
