This October the Catholic Church in the United States of America celebrates Respect Life Month for the 40th year. It was in October of 1972 that the bishops began the tradition of designating this month to celebrate the sanctity of life from conception until natural death. With over 54 million unborn babies aborted in our nation since January 22, 1973, countless states looking to legalize physicians assisted suicide and a general lack of respect for human life as seen in the violence on our city streets, there is still much work to be done.

On January 22, 1973, our nation experienced a great tragedy – the Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton U.S. Supreme Court decisions that legalized abortion on demand through all nine months of pregnancy. This year marks the 39th anniversary of these decisions, leaving in its wake over 55 million unborn babies aborted and countless women and men wounded. Since 1974, pro-life people of all faiths have been assembling in Washington, D.C., with the hope of overturning this unjust law, speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves. In 2012, the Archdiocese of Chicago’s group and over 200,000 others will March for Life, down Constitution Avenue past the U.S. Capitol and ending at the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court. This year, the Archdiocesan Respect Life Office is sending a record number of people to the March for Life, with over 450 youth, young adults and adults making this pilgrimage. What a blessing!

The Respect Life Office is an agency of the Archdiocese of Chicago in the department of Parish Life and Formation. We are blessed to have an office with 5 staff members who each minister to the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago in different ways. It is our belief and that of the Catholic Church that every human life is a precious gift, made in God’s image and likeness, to be cherished by all, regardless of how broken, unformed, guilty or vulnerable that life may be.
