Monies currently being raised through campaign will serve to Teach Who Christ Is

The To Teach Who Christ Is campaign is an effort to raise $350 million for the ministries of the Catholic Church in Cook and Lake counties. To date, more than $107 million has been raised through major gifts and efforts in parish communities.

The campaign seeks $150 million for local parish communities, $150 million for scholarships for children in Catholic schools, $30 million for life and safety issues in parish buildings, $12 million for religious education programs and $8 million for leadership programs in Catholic schools.

All parishes in the Archdiocese of Chicago are participating in the campaign through five waves. More than 100 parishes have already conducted the campaign process and continue to accept gifts. The remaining parishes will participate through the end of 2016. A full 60 percent of funds parishes raise remain at the parish for needs they identify. In addition, parishes retain 100 percent of funds they raise over their goals.

Several parishes have used the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign as an opportunity to raise significant funds for their community’s local needs. Parishes are raising funds to renovate their church, school and activity buildings as well as for religious education programs, endowments, debt repayment and a variety of ministry priorities.

As part of the campaign effort, a new independent charitable organization, the Catholic Education Scholarship Trust, has been established. Its specific mission is to provide scholarships to children in Catholic schools throughout the Archdiocese. A trial program, the Caritas Scholars, was implemented in a subset of communities for the 2013-2014 school year and will continue for the 2014-2015 school year. Already, 630 students at 65 schools received scholarship awards averaging $1,800. These scholarships are committed for three years and given to children, not schools, so remain with the student should they transfer to another Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Qualified families are required to contribute to the cost of tuition.
