Formalizing Allegations

Individuals have different reasons for formalizing an allegation. For some, it is a significant step in their healing process. Others look to formalization of an allegation of sexual abuse as a way to expedite closure on such an event in their lives or to seek collaboration with other allegations against their alleged abuser, and to protect innocent children.

Individuals who contact the Office for Child Abuse Investigations and Review have the option to formalize their allegations through a meeting (preferably in person) with the Director or Assistant Director of the Office. Also present during the meeting would be a representative from the Archdiocesan Office of Assistance Ministry to provide pastoral support and assistance toward the victim-survivor’s continued emotional and spiritual healing.

Individuals formalizing an allegation may be accompanied by anyone they choose, and may bring with them any items they feel important to share, such as photographs, letters, yearbooks, etc.

Upon receiving an allegation, the Office for Child Abuse Investigations and Review will notify the appropriate civil authorities, the Archbishop and other appropriate Archdiocesan parties. The individuals in these agencies are bound by confidentiality.
