Cardinal's letter announcing National Donor Sabbath
My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
During the weekend of November 11-13, Catholics and religious communities across the country will observe National Donor Sabbath. This weekend will be a time when we pause to remember those who have given life to others through organ and tissue donation at the time of their death.
It is also a time to remember those who have received or await these gifts that give life. Organ donation and transplantation are an expression of human compassion and of our participation in Christ’s love for his people.
With more than 89,000 Americans waiting for lifesaving organ transplants and thousands more waiting for life-enhancing tissue or cornea transplants, the challenge to participate in this form of charity is clear. Pope Benedict XVI participates personally as a card-carrying organ donor.
May God bless all of you.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I.
Archbishop of Chicago
