Re: Death of Terri Schindler Schiavo
March 31, 2005
As we mourn the passing of Terri Schindler Schiavo, we give thanks to God for the gift of her earthly life, and the tremendous witness she gave to the world during her last days. Terri died today not because she was terminally ill, but because she was severely disabled and was deliberately denied the basic sustenance of food and water.

Mission Sunday 2005
Dear Friends in Christ,
World Mission Sunday is an opportune occasion to increase our awareness of the urgent necessity to participate in the mission of Christ. Mission is a way of being church. Our discipleship is rooted in a personal conversion to Jesus Christ. Christ in the Eucharist continually transforms us into witnesses of his own love and mercy.

A Letter to Chicago's Young Men and Women from Cardinal George in Rom
April 14, 2005
Dear Young Men and Women of the Archdiocese of Chicago,
I write to you from Rome during a very important and historic time in the life of our Church in which both you and I are privileged to participate. You are probably aware that this Monday, April 18 th, I will enter into conclave with the other voting members of the College of Cardinals to elect the next Pope, who as successor to the Apostle Peter will lead the Church during the years ahead. This is an awesome and challenging responsibility in which, when I was your age, I never imagined that I would participate.

Cardinal's letter for Jan. 3-4
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
You have heard and read much over the last two years about the Church's response to the tragedy of child sexual abuse by Catholic clergy. Now, two comprehensive national reports concerning this tragedy will finally be issued by the U.S. Catholic Conference of Bishops' Office of Child and Youth Protection and the National Review Board in Washington, D.C. I know the information contributed by the Archdiocese of Chicago to each report, but I do not have and have not seen the final comprehensive reports. I am looking forward to the information and perspective these reports are expected to provide.
