STATEMENT OF FRANCIS CARDINAL GEORGE, O.M.I.
Re: The appointment of Bishop J. Peter Sartain as Bishop of Joliet
May 16, 2006
The Holy Father’s appointment of the Most Rev. J. Peter Sartain as Bishop of Joliet is a sign of his esteem and care for our neighboring diocese. Bishop Sartain, a priest of the Diocese of Memphis, has been Bishop of Little Rock, Arkansas, for more than six years. He serves as chair of the Home Missions Committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. He is well prepared to join the bishops of Illinois in strengthening the mission of the Catholic Church in our state.
Even as I welcome Bishop Sartain, I wish to express my gratitude to Bishop Joseph Imesch for his long years of service to the Joliet Diocese. He has been looking forward to relinquishing his responsibilities and can do so now with the assurance that the diocese he loves will be well cared for in the years to come.
