The Cardinal has remained stable, with normal vital signs, no fever, and stable blood counts (hemoglobin and hematocrit). He slept well last night and this morning Mass was celebrated in his room. He remains somewhat uncomfortable in the area of his incision. The Cardinal will restart eating by mouth today, beginning with some liquids. The Cardinal also clearly wants to get back to more active functioning, and is looking forward to resuming his walking and rehabilitation.
Yesterday, the Cardinal underwent an upper endoscopy (also known as an EGD for esophagogastroduodenoscopy) and an examination of his distal colon (similar to a flexible sigmoidoscopy or partial colonoscopy). At no time was the Cardinal under anesthesia.
For today, he will remain in the Intensive Care Unit for close monitoring of his vital signs and blood counts. Although it is most likely that the episode of bleeding experienced early Saturday morning was self-limited, the Cardinal will be closely observed for any recurrence.
