Month of Mary

With all the current events that control our schedules and the civic events that fill our calendars, I’m glad to remember on May 1 that we dedicate a full month, no matter what else happens, to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

In recent years, many Catholics have re-discovered the Rosary or have learned to pray it for the first time. I’d like to see us take up again the practice of praying the Angelus and the Memorare and the Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary (the Litany of Loreto). In the Gospels, the titles given to Jesus by others and what he calls himself are shorthand for what we say about him in the Creed. Likewise, the titles we give the Blessed Mother in praying her litany tell us who she is for us and for the world. Many of our parish churches are dedicated to Mary under different titles, some of them contemporary, some traditional. A month is not too long to think about them and use them in prayer.
