"Thanks"
Twelve years ago, when I returned to Chicago as Archbishop, I was asked in an interview what I would like to have written on my tombstone. I answered, “Thanks.”
At this time of year, we celebrate many anniversaries: of first communion, of confirmation, of graduation. Anniversaries are a time to congratulate someone; they are also a time to be grateful. The most important things in life are gifts we haven’t earned: life itself, new life in Christ, the love of a mother and father, of friends and of spouses. Recognizing a gift calls for only one response: thanks.
