Listening for a Call
The weeks before Christmas are time spent in waiting while listening for a call. The “caller” in the liturgy is St. John the Baptist, the cousin of Jesus who went before him and pointed him out to others. St. John the Baptist also, in a certain sense, prepared the field for Jesus’ ministry, which was at first inserted into the renewal movement begun by John.
Who calls us? The Lord uses others to show us the way, to open up the path to him. In Advent, it might be helpful to make a mental list of those who have helped us follow the Lord and thank them, if they’re still on this earth. It might be good, as well, to notice those whom the Lord expects us to call, to be his voice, to be John the Baptist for our family and friends.
