All in the Family

It’s all in the family. This is a truism because it’s true. When a man and a woman marry, they bring their family with them because neither is who he or she is without their family.

We belong to the family of God. We are not just creatures of God, made in his image and likeness. We are sons and daughters of God, marked in baptism with the sign of God’s only begotten Son and destined to live with God forever. Our life of grace is the life of Father, Son and Holy Spirit, of Lover, Beloved and their Love. Our life after baptism has its source in the Father, its pattern in the Son (the Word made flesh in Jesus of Nazareth), and its experience in the Spirit.

Baptism, re-birth in grace, can no more be undone than can physical birth be denied. If you’re born, you’re born; if you’re reborn, you’re reborn. The Church is not a club. The Church is a family, the family of God.
