Captured on Film

A cousin who is sorting out personal mementoes recently sent me two studio photographs: one of my parents on their wedding day, August 10, 1929, and the other of myself on my First Holy Communion Day, May 5, 1945.  They both look like pictures of people from another era!

Now that snapshots and informal photos have become part of every occasion, I wonder how often any of these numerous filmed pictures are looked at again.  Perhaps their purpose is not to recall important moments but to capture them on film so that we can imagine that a moment, a short occasion, will be permanently memorialized and, in a sense, last forever.  Perhaps the desire to take photos and capture a fleeting moment on film is really a reminder that we are made for eternity.
