Salvation

The Scriptures and liturgical celebrations of Holy Week lead us from the clouds gathering around Jesus’ life through his trial, passion and death and, on Easter, to the empty tomb and his resurrection from the realm of the dead to eternal glory in his Kingdom.  The invitation this week, through God’s grace, is to join Christ and find salvation.

What are the clouds gathering around our lives now?  Always, there is our sinfulness, the many ways in which we betray the Lord, our cooperation with the evil that Christ’s conquest over sin and death will finally banish when he returns in glory.  Externally, there are the political forces that threaten the Church’s public voice in her institutions, the cultural forces that regard Christ’s Gospel as a threat to their way of life, the economic forces that ignore the poor, who are the first citizens of God’s kingdom.  For strength in these maelstroms, we pray this week.
