Peace is a Gift
The NATO summit in Chicago reminds us of the distinction between Christ’s peace, which is a gift prayed for at each Mass, and the world’s peace, which is the negotiated absence of conflict.
Peace that is purely external, enforced by treaties, leaves the heart and soul unhealed. Peace that is internal is a gift that heals our hearts and souls and brings us to a level of life in Christ that opens the doors to eternal life. We should pray for both: freedom from violence in our hearts, our homes, our streets, our world; but more basically freedom to live in the Kingdom of God, without external constraint. In the end, peace is a gift, for which we give thanks each day.
