ASUNTO: LA ELECCIÓN DEL PAPA BENEDICTO XVI
Le doy gracias a Dios por darnos el don de tener un nuevo Pastor Supremo para la iglesia católica. Estoy seguro que el pueblo de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago se une a mí en la alegría que tengo por la elección de un nuevo Santo Padre, el Papa Benedicto XVI. Como el sucesor número 264 de San Pedro, el Papa Benedicto XVI cuenta con nuestro amor, nuestras oraciones y nuestro apoyo en el inicio del ministerio que tiene a su cargo para guiar a la iglesia católica y proclamar la Palabra de Jesucristo al mundo.
Agradezco a las muchas personas que oraron por los cardenales que nos reunimos para elegir al Papa. Apreciamos profundamente las oraciones que hicieron por nosotros pues nos proporcionaron sustento durante el tiempo que pasamos discerniendo.
Regresaré a Chicago el 25 de abril y estaré deseoso de comenzar a trabajar con y bajo la guía del Papa Benedicto XVI, para cuidar a los católicos de la arquidiócesis.

CARDINAL RATZINGER IS ELECTED AS NEW POPE, BENEDICT XVI
VATICAN CITY, APR 19, 2005 (VIS) - Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected as Supreme Pontiff, the 264th successor of Peter, and has chosen the name Benedict XVI.
The cardinal proto-deacon made the solemn announcement to the people at 6:43 p.m. from the external loggia of the Hall of Blessings of the Vatican Basilica following the white smoke which occurred at 5:50 p.m.
Following are the words of Cardinal Jorge Arturo Medina Estevez:
Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum; habemus Papam; Eminentissium ac Reverendissium Dominum, Dominum Josephum Sanctae Romanae Ecclesiae Cardinalem Ratzinger Qui sibi nomen imposuit Benedictum XVI
(I announce to you with great joy; We have a Pope; The most eminent and most reverend Lord Lord Joseph Cardinal of Holy Roman Church Ratzinger Who has taken the name Benedict XVI )

A Letter to Chicago's Young Men and Women from Cardinal George in Rome

Dear Young Men and Women of the Archdiocese of Chicago,
I write to you from Rome during a very important and historic time in the life of our Church in which both you and I are privileged to participate. You are probably aware that this Monday, April 18 th, I will enter into conclave with the other voting members of the College of Cardinals to elect the next Pope, who as successor to the Apostle Peter will lead the Church during the years ahead. This is an awesome and challenging responsibility in which, when I was your age, I never imagined that I would participate.
