"The Church exists in order to evangelize." "Catechesis is a remarkable moment in the whole process of evangelization." The Department of Evangelization, Catechesis and Worship provides administrative support for the Archbishop in his duty as teacher of the faith and pastor of the faithful. It is responsible for the coordination of the evangelical, catechetical, and ecumenical dimensions of the mission of this local church. It also works closely with those others charged by the Archbishop with the coordination of the liturgical and pastoral life of the Church of Chicago. Through the staffs of its agencies and offices, it offers a wide variety of services to parishes, institutions of higher education and ecumenical organizations in the Archdiocese. It seeks to promote and enhance the ministries of evangelization, catechesis and worship in all their forms.

    The mission of the Anawim Center is to create a place of prayer serving the Native American community in the Archdiocese of Chicago, contributing to the mission of the Church of Chicago and the Church Universal in the work of the Gospel.
    The Anawim Center serves to assist the Church in this mission through Worship, evangelization, catechesis, community-building, service, healing, and reconciliation, empowering this community with their particular cultural and spiritual gifts to be involved in the process by which the transformation of the human family into the Body of Christ will be realized.
    This will be carried out in the spirit of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha according to the Documents of Vatican Council II.

  • Office for Catechesis and Youth Ministry

    The Office for Catechesis and Youth Ministry (OFCYM) is the representative body through which the Archbishop directs the catechetical activities of the Archdiocese of Chicago. As part of the evangelizing mission of the Church, OFCYM promotes lifelong catechesis through the formation and certification of catechists and catechetical leaders, adult faith formation, elementary-family catechesis, and youth ministry. OFCYM serves the catechetical leaders and youth ministers in vicariates, deaneries, clusters, families and other Archdiocesan agencies. OFCYM provides advocacy, leadership and vision for catechesis and youth ministry in the Archdiocese through:
    • Programs and resources for the formation, certification and development of catechists, youth ministers, and catechetical leaders.
    • Analysis of the state of catechesis and youth ministry in the Archdiocese leading to the design and/or implementation of appropriate responses.
    • Collaboration and networking with Archdiocesan departments and agencies and other related local and national organizations.
    • Facilitation of widespread use of all media resources.

  • OFFICE FOR ASIAN CATHOLICS

    The office is responsible for implementing the Archdiocese of Chicago's mission and vision of a multi-cultural church among the diverse Asian communities thru their inculturation, evangelization, integration and participation in building the local church. Where appropriate, the office serves as a link and a resource to more than 80 parishes with significant Asian presence, and to local, national and international groups, agencies and institutions on the pastoral care of Asian peoples.
    The office also coordinates the following Asian Missions and Pastoral Centers: Indo-Chinese Catholic Center, St. Therese Chinese Catholic Mission, St. Paul Chong Hasang Korean Catholic Mission, Korean Martyrs Catholic Mission and Syro-Malankara Indian Catholic Mission.
    "Asian" refers to those having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia or the Indian sub-continent. The catholic Asian population comprise 3% of the total catholic population of the archdiocese and includes immigrants and refugees from the Philippines. China, Hongkong,Taiwan, Korea, India, Japan,Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand and Sri-Lanka

    The Office for Black Catholics is staff to Cardinal Francis George, OMI and serves to assist the Cardinal in his mission to provide sanctification to Catholics of African ancestry: Africans, African Americans, Haitian Americans, Caribbean Americans, etc. Empowering them to become holy and at the same time contributing to the faith and culture, unity and diversity that strengthens the whole multi-cultural Church of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

  • OFFICE FOR EUROPEAN CATHOLICS
    Director: Rev. Casimir Garbacz, SVD
    The Office identifies the pastoral needs of European ethnic communities present within the Archdiocese of Chicago, including Poles, Italians, Lithuanians, Croatians, Irish, Germans, Czechs, Slovaks, Slovenians, Hungarians and Latvians. These groups are represented on an Advisory Board coordinated by the director.
    The Director of the Office, who is a member of the Cardinal's staff, represents and advances these needs to the Cardinal and other appropriate archdiocesan agencies, and promotes leadership on behalf of the Archdiocese among people of European heritage. A particular emphasis is placed on inter-agency contact to help formulate agency programs that are responsive to ethnic, cultural and immigrant concerns and needs of European groups. In addition, the Office sponsors a variety of educational, pastoral and information-sharing programs on issues of vital concern to members of these ethnic groups, especially newcomers.

    In Christian terms, the family is sacred and holy, a "community of life and love." In Familiaris Consortio, we are called to be sensitive to the needs of families. This office assists families, with all their diversity, to develop the values of family life. This is done indirectly by assisting parish staffs to develop a family perspective in their outreach to families. The office coordinates the activity of various programs and serves as a resource to ministers and parish staffs to enhance and enrich ministry to marriage and family life. While under catholic auspices, this ministry is ecumenical in nature and open to everyone. Staff members are available to work with parish staff to help build effective ministry for families.

  • PEACE AND JUSTICE

    This agency coordinates archdiocesan advocacy and ministry in the areas of social justice and peace. The office provides programs and services with special attention given to poverty issues, international affairs, and domestic and urban questions. Programs include C.C.H.D. (Catholic Campaign for Human Development), C.R.S. (Catholic Relief Services), Operation Rice Bowl, the Parish Sharing Program, the Rural Life Conference, and Housing.

  • RESPECT LIFE
    Director: Ms. Mary-Louise Kurey
    This agency promotes reverence for the gift of life and educates the people of the Archdiocese on the life issues. It promotes the cause of life through advocacy and prayer. It has available educational resources, a speaker bureau and sponsors annual conferences for adults and adolescents. The office also maintains Project Rachel, a program of reconciliation for those who participated in an abortion; and the Maternity Fund for those who need assistance, e.g., because of a lack of medical insurance.

    The APC serves as a consultative body to the Archbishop to assist him in his pastoral task. Its membership is drawn from the parishes of the Archdiocese and reflects the diversity of the Archdiocese, taking into consideration differences in areas, social conditions, professions and state of life. The members listen to the issues and concerns presented by the Archbishop, parish delegates in a deanery meeting, an agency of the Archdiocese or any member of the Archdiocese.   • ARCHDIOCESAN PRESBYTERAL COUNCIL

    The Presbyteral Council serves as a consultative body to the Archbishop representing the presbyterate. It assists the Archbishop in the governance of the diocese in order that the pastoral welfare of the people of God may be promoted as effectively as possible. About 2/3 of the members are freely elected, others ex-officio or appointed by the Archbishop. The council is convoked and presided over by the Archbishop. (Can. 495-502)

    The Archdiocesan Women/s Committee is an adjunct Committee of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council which meets separately and serves as a consultative body to the Archbishop. It assists him in his pastoral task in the area of women's concerns and works to make visible the equality and dignity of all people. Its members represent the wide diversity of women in the Archdiocese responding to these concerns in light of the Catholic faith.
