Professor Rabbi Meir Soloveichik, Guest Lecturer for the event, offered his thoughts on "Jews, Catholics and the American Idea" focusing on religious freedom in the United States. Rabbi Soloveichik is Director of the Straus Center for Torah and Western Thought at Yeshiva University and Associate Rabbi at Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun in Manhattan. A full transcript of Rabbi Soloveichik's address will be available shortly on our website.

Fr. Dennis Holtschneider, President of DePaul University, welcomed an audience of 250 guests to the DePaul Campus for the 18th Annual Jerusalem Lecture. This year's lecture was held at the Lincoln Park Campus Student Center.

Francis Cardinal George, a strong supporter of interreligious dialogue, opened his welcome address with a personal reflection on a visit to Yeshiva University's library. He described the library as a place where study partners debate and argue over texts, dissecting them page by page, line by line, word by word, in the rabbinic tradition of beit midrash (house of study). Cardinal George stated that the Jerusalem Lectures are analogous to a beit midrash for the Catholic Jewish dialogue. Cardinal George further reflected on the changes that have occurred since he was the Jerusalem Guest Lecturer in 2005, citing his astonishment at how rapidly secularization has developed in the United States, and that the marginalization of the biblical world view on such basic issues as the nature of marriage continues at a fast pace.
