Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., will ordain 15 men to the Permanent Diaconate on Saturday, May 28, at St. Mary of the Angels Church, 1850 N. Hermitage, Chicago. The ordination is the culmination of four years of preparation that included academic classes, retreats and participation in service projects. Many of the wives also participated in much of the formation program with their husbands, and some elected to earn a Certificate of Studies in Lay Ministry.
Pope Paul VI restored the permanent diaconate almost 40 years ago. Currently, there are about 31,000 permanent deacons worldwide in 132 countries with more than 14,000 in the United States. The 15 new deacons will become part of the largest number of active deacons in any archdiocese in the country, totaling more than 600.
