CHICAGO (February 17, 2006) The Most Rev. George J. Rassas, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago and Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Chicago, has been named Episcopal Vicar of Vicariate I, an archdiocesan designation for the geographic area that includes Cook County’s north suburbs and all of Lake County. His appointment will become effective February 21.
Bishop Rassas will join five other auxiliary bishops in assisting Cardinal George in the pastoral administration of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
In his letter to parishes announcing his appointment, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago said of Bishop Rassas, “He knows Lake and northern Cook counties and will be a fine bishop for that area of the Archdiocese.”
Bishop Rassas has a long history in the northern suburbs. He was raised in Winnetka and attended Saints Faith Hope and Charity grammar school, Quigley North High School, Niles College and Saint Mary of the Lake Seminary before being ordained a priest in 1968. He was an associate pastor at Queen of the Rosary Parish, Elk Grove Village; St. Genevieve Parish, Chicago; St. Norbert’s Parish, Northbrook; and Sacred Heart Parish, Winnetka, before being named pastor at St. Mary’s Parish, in Lake Forest, where he served before becoming Vicar General in November 2004. He was ordained an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Chicago on February 2.
