STATEMENT FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO
Re: Notre Dame High School for Boys Sponsorship Transition

June 30, 2006

The Office of Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Chicago has been informed that the Congregation of Holy Cross, Indiana Province, the religious order that sponsors Notre Dame High School for Boys in Niles, has made the decision to withdraw their sponsorship and religious personnel at the end of the 2006-2007 school year.

Dr. Nicholas M. Wolsonovich, Superintendent of Schools, remarked that Notre Dame High School, with almost 800 students and over 11,000 alumni, is a thriving and successful example of Catholic secondary education in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Every effort will be put in place to work with all interested parties to assure that the school continues its more than 50 year mission to educate young men. Notre Dame High School is well positioned with resources and support from a dedicated base of parents, faculty, alumni and friends. During this past school year this fine college preparatory school has exhibited a number of outstanding academic accomplishments in the areas of music, science, literature, and art. This year, thirteen percent of the Notre Dame senior class was named to the Illinois State Scholar roster while 97% of the 2006 graduating class will attend college next year.

The transition when completed will continue to provide a Catholic secondary education of the highest quality. There are a number of possible, new and effective governance models to draw upon for Notre Dame High School. Additionally, area pastors and leadership at parishes in and around Niles will be invited to participate in efforts to support Notre Dames’ educational mission.
