OLD ST. MARY’S TO HOST BLACK CATHOLIC REVIVAL
“No Ways Tired” at Chicago’s First Catholic Parish

Chicago, IL, September 22, 2006 For three consecutive evenings beginning on Tuesday, September 26, the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Office for Black Catholics is hosting No Ways Tired, an old-fashioned revival of preaching and music, at Old St. Mary’s Church, 1550 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago. The parish was first organized in 1833.

“This revival in the Black Catholic tradition will speak to the heart of every Catholic, and set their spirits on fire,” says Shelia Adams, Director of the Archdiocese’s Office of Black Catholics. No Ways Tired is part of MISSION CHICAGO, the Archdiocese’s ongoing evangelization effort announced by Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., earlier this year.

Leading off the revival on Tuesday, September 26, will be Black Catholic scholar and author, Fr. Joseph A. Brown, who heads the Black American Studies Program at Southern Illinois University, and is a former director of the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University. A poet and contributor to the National Catholic Reporter, Brown’s books include To Stand on the Rock: Meditations on Black Catholic Identity.

The Wednesday, September 27 rally, which will also begin at 7 p.m., will be led by Fr. Tony Ricard, a Catholic revivalist, youth speaker and Pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish in New Orleans, LA.

The Dean of Black Catholic Preachers, Fr. James Goode, O.F.M., will lead the closing assembly on Thursday, September 28. Goode is Pastoral Director of Solid Ground Franciscan Ministry, an evangelization ministry with African American Families and the founder and president of the National Black Catholic Apostolate for Life.

No Ways Tired begins each night at 7 p.m., and its music and singing will be led by Robin Jones Watson, Deneen Taylor, the Nia Imani Youth Gospel Choir, the Holy Family (Chicago) Gospel Choir, St. Sabina Spirit of David Dance Ministry and the Holy Name of Mary Liturgical Dancers.
