SECRETARY TO POPE JOHN PAUL II TO BE HONORED AT FIFTH ANNUAL
BISHOP ABRAMOWICZ SEMINARY PROGRAM BENEFIT BANQUET
CHICAGO, IL (June 9, 2008) – The longtime secretary to Pope John Paul II will be honored during the Fifth Annual Benefit Banquet for the Bishop Abramowicz Seminary Program of the Archdiocese of Chicago on Sunday, June 29, at White Eagle Restaurant, 6839 Milwaukee Ave., Niles. The program, which includes a reception, silent auction and dinner, begins at 4:30 p.m.
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago will present Stanislaw Cardinal Dziwisz with the Caritas Christi Award for service to Polonia. Cardinal Dziwisz served as private secretary to the late Pope John Paul II for more than 35 years and is the Archbishop of Kraków, Poland.
The name of the award is taken from the Latin version of the episcopal motto of the late Bishop Alfred Abramowicz, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, Caritas Christi urget me, “The love of Christ impels us,” adapted from St. Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians.
The Bishop Abramowicz Seminary Program w as founded in 1999 as a place of formation and discernment for Polish men to learn about American culture in preparation for study at the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary. To date, 20 men have completed the program and have been ordained for the Archdiocese.
