Chicago, IL (May 26, 2009) – Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., Archbishop of Chicago, has ordained fifteen men as new, permanent deacons.  The Diaconate ordination took place on Sunday, May 24, at Queen of All Saints Basilica on Chicago’s northwest side.

The newly ordained deacons completed a four-year program at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary that included classes in Christology, Pastoral Theology and the Sacraments.  They will serve in their home parishes in Chicago, Arlington Heights, Chicago Ridge, Hoffman Estates, Lake Villa, Niles, Oak Park, Palatine, Schaumburg, South Holland, Tinley Park, Wadsworth and Winnetka.

Between 95 and 96 percent of deacons are married with families and most are also engaged in outside occupations.  They are clergy, along with priests and bishops.  The ministries that Deacons perform include the teaching mission of the Church, caring for the poor, performing baptisms and marriages, conducting funeral liturgies, presiding at wake services and assisting the priest at Mass by proclaiming the Gospel, preaching, leading intercessions, preparing the altar and intoning the dismissal.

Francisco Foti will serve at Our Lady of the Snows, 4810 South Leamington Avenue, Chicago. 

Kevin D. Hill will serve at St. John Brebeuf Parish, 8307 North Harlem Avenue, Niles.

Robert J. Landuyt will serve at Our Lady of the Ridge Parish, 10811 South Ridgeland Avenue, Chicago Ridge.

Donald R. Maiers will serve at St. Marcelline Parish, 822 South Springinsguth Road, Schaumburg.

James R. Minor, will serve at Prince of Peace Parish, 135 South Milwaukee Avenue, Lake Villa.

John P. Orzechowski will serve at Our Lady of the Ridge Parish, 10811 South Ridgeland Avenue, Chicago Ridge.

Barry E. Schliesmann will serve at Ss. Faith, Hope and Charity Parish, 191 Linden Street, Winnetka.

William J. Schultz will serve at St. Stephen, Deacon and Martyr Parish, 17500 South 84th Avenue, Tinley Park.

Lawrence R. Schumacher will serve at St. Theresa Parish, 455 North Benton, Palatine.

Edward J. Simola will serve at St. William Parish, 2558 North Sayre Avenue, Chicago.

Timothy G. Springer will serve at St. Jude the Apostle Parish, 900 East 154th Street, South Holland.

Allen G. Tatara will serve at St. Hubert Parish, 705 Grand Canyon Street, Hoffman Estates.

Joseph A. Walsh will serve at Ascension Parish, 801 South East Avenue, Oak Park.

Thomas Westerkamp will serve at St. James Parish, 831 North Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights.
