– Christopher J. Cannova, Director of Compensation & Benefits for the Archdiocese since August of 2008, has been appointed Director of the Department of Personnel Services. The appointment was made by Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago, and is effective July 1, 2012. Cannova replaces Carol Fowler, D.Min., who will be retiring after twenty-one years as the Department Director of Personnel Services.

“I am delighted that Chris expressed his interest in and willingness to serve the Archbishop and Archdiocese in this significant, leadership capacity,” said Jimmy Lago, Chancellor of the Archdiocese. “His knowledge and experience will be particularly necessary in helping to guide us to a sound, financial future as we continue to provide excellent employee and clerical benefits and services.”

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve in this role, and look forward to building upon the foundation established by Carol Fowler,” said Christopher Cannova. “I am extremely excited to contribute my experience in human resource management in this capacity, in the service to the department and the parishes, schools and ministries which we support.”

In his new position, Cannova will report directly to the Moderator of the Curia and will be responsible for the overall formation, revision and implementation of the comprehensive human resources function of the Archdiocese for priests, deacons, religious and lay staff of approximately 16,000 people. The Department of Personnel Services includes more than a dozen agencies, including Human Resources, Priests’ Placement Board and the Office for Protection of Children and Youth. He will also be a member of the Cardinal’s Administrative Council.

Cannova holds his Master of Arts in Labor and Industrial Relations and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His professional business experience began in the early ‘90s as a Human Resources Associate with Commonwealth Edison Company. He later served in a number of Human Resources capacities at Motorola, Inc., and at Salomon Smith Barney until March 2001 when he became Associate Director for Human Resources at Little City Foundation. He came to the Archdiocese of Chicago as Associate Director of Human Resources in 2002. After five years in this position, Cannova worked as a Retirement Plan Consultant, then returned to the Archdiocese in 2008 as Director of Compensation & Benefits.

Cannova has served on various boards and committees of non-profits and professional associations, and has spoken at several national conferences on employee benefits.

Cannova, his wife, Penni, and their three children reside in Wheaton and are members of St. Isidore Parish in the Joliet Diocese where they are active in several parish ministries including serving as catechists and on parish committees.
