CHICAGO, IL (December 10, 2012) - This overnight celebration honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas, begins with Mass on Tuesday, December 11, at 8 p.m., celebrated by Auxiliary Bishop Alberto Rojas at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, 1100 North River Road in Des Plaines.
After a fireworks display at 9:30 p.m., prayers for immigrants will be led by Fr. Manuel Dorantes. At 10:30 p.m., Deacon Miguel Vargas will bless the torches that will be carried that evening by representatives from Hispanic parishes throughout the Archdiocese. Following the blessing there will be a solemn procession of the Blessed Sacrament from the gym to the outdoor grotto.
Beginning at midnight, Masses in the gym will be celebrated throughout the early morning and throughout the entire day on Wednesday. Fr. Marco Mercado, director of the Office for Hispanic Catholics, will be the main celebrant at the midnight Mass and will lead participants in the “mañanitas” (traditional serenade to Our Lady).
Torch bearers will pass through the suburbs of Rosemont, Schiller Park, River Grove, Elmwood Park and several other Chicago neighborhoods. Upon arriving at their respective parishes, torch bearers will place the torch at a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the “mañanitas” will be sung, followed by Mass at approximately 5 a.m.
Fr. Miguel A. Martinez, rector of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, will celebrate the closing Mass at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 12.
