Hospital Chaplain and Pastor, Fr. Edward Fitzgerald, Dies
Was Professor and Dean at Archdiocesan Seminaries

Chicago, IL (September 27, 2004) – Fr. Edward Fitzgerald, former professor at Quigley Preparatory Seminary and Dean of Discipline for Philosophy students at the University of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, has died at age 88.

Fr. Fitzgerald passed away on Saturday, September 25. He was a patient at Mercy Hospital at the time of his death and had been diagnosed with cancer recently. Fr. Fitzgerald was a chaplain at the hospital for many years following his retirement and was in residence there.

He was a Chicago native, ordained in 1940 by Samuel Cardinal Stritch. He obtained his doctorate in Theology from St. Mary Seminary and did post-graduate studies at DePaul and Loyola Universities.

From 1941 to 1944, Fr. Fitzgerald was associate pastor at St. Ambrose Parish, and for the following year he served in that capacity at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish.

He began his academic career at Quigley Preparatory Seminary in November 1944 and served on the faculty there until 1946, when he was appointed the Dean of Discipline for Philosophy students at the University of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary. Fr. Fitzgerald was a member of the St. Mary faculty for 20 years.

Fr. Fitzgerald’s first pastorate began in 1966 at St. Patrick Parish in Lemont. Six years later, he became pastor of St. John Chrysostom in Bellwood, serving there for ten years. In 1982, he was named pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes on Keeler St. in Chicago where he served for four years before his retirement in 1986. At that time, Fr. Fitzgerald became the chaplain of Mercy Hospital and took up residence there. He was made pastor emeritus of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in 1986.

Visitation for Fr. Fitzgerald will take place Monday, September 27, from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 4727 W. 103 rd. St., Oak Lawn. Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I., will be the main celebrant at a funeral Mass for Fr. Fitzgerald at Holy Name Cathedral on Tuesday, September 28, at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Mundelein Seminary.

Fr. Fitzgerald is survived by several cousins, including Adrian Dominican sister, Sr. Marion O’Connor, O.P.
