Cicero Pastor, Fr. Thaddeus Makuch, Dies
Chicago, IL (December 6, 2004) - Fr. Thaddeus Makuch, pastor for 18 years of St. Mary of Czestochowa Parish in Cicero, has died at the age of 78. Fr. Makuch died of kidney failure on Friday, December 3, at McNeal Memorial Hospital.
He was a Chicago native who graduated from St. John of God Elementary School and De La Salle High School before entering Quigley Preparatory Seminary in 1944. Fr. Makuch graduated from St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein in 1953 and was ordained that year by Cardinal Stritch.
For 25 years, Fr. Makuch served as an assistant pastor at four parishes: Assumption Parish (1953-1960), St. Casimir Parish (1960-1966), St. Michael Parish on South Shore Drive (1966-1973), and St. Peter and Paul Parish on South Paulina (1973-1979).
In 1979, he became pastor of St. Mary of Czestochowa Parish in Cicero. At that time, the parish was predominantly Polish. As the community of Cicero became more Hispanic, Fr. Makuch saw to it that Hispanic Catholics were integrated into his parish. His classmate, Fr. John Enright, said it was a notable part of his career as a pastor that he had a great openness to Hispanic ministry and he was very successful in helping the community of St. Mary of Czestochowa transition from a Polish to a Hispanic parish.
When the Redemptorist priests took over the parish in 1997, the year Fr. Makuch retired, they offered Fr. Makuch hospitality and he was pleased to remain in residence there continuing to assist the parish.
Fr. Makuch also served on the Priests Personnel Board of the Archdiocese for several years I the 70s and 80s, and encouraged students from Poland and other countries to become priests as Co-Director of the Office for International Priests. He also served on the Board of the Catholic League for Religious Assistance to the Church in Poland.
Visitation for Fr. Makuch will take place at Sourek Manor Funeral Home, 5645 W. 35 th St., Cicero, from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, December 7, and at St. Mary of Czestochowa Church, 3010 S. 48 th Ct., Cicero, from 1 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, December 8, and from 8 to 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 9.
Bishop Thad Jakubowski will be the main celebrant at a funeral Mass for Fr. Makuch at St. Mary of Czestochowa on Thursday, December 9, at 10 a.m. Bishop Thomas Paprocki, a former altar server for Fr. Makuch, will deliver the homily. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Justice.
Fr. Makuch is survived by three of his seven sisters, Stephanie Budz, Martha Wolszon and Helen Stoniecki, and many nieces and nephews.
