Fr. Eugene Keusal, Archdiocesan Priest, Dies

Chicago, IL (September 8, 2006) - Fr. Eugene Keusal, pastor emeritus of St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish in Mundelein, died September 6 of colon cancer at Resurrection Life Center in Chicago. He was 71 years old.
A Chicago native, Fr. Keusal graduated from Immaculate Conception elementary school on Chicago's northwest side, Quigley Preparatory Seminary and, in 1961, from the University of St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein.
Fr. Keusal's first assignment was at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish on Chicago's northwest side from 1961 to 1966. He then transferred to St. Simeon Parish in Bellwood where he remained until 1968. On June 1 of that year, he became Assistant Pastor of Antioch's St. Peter's Parish.
Fr. Keusal then served as an Associate Pastor at four different parishes: St. Anastasia's in Waukegan from 1974 to 1978; St. Joseph's in Wilmette from 1978 to 1979; St. Rosalie Parish in Harwood Heights from 1979 to 1982; and Lake Zurich's St. Francis de Sales Parish during 1982 and 1983. He then became pastor of St. Mary Parish Fremont Center in Mundelein in 1983, a post he held for thirteen years until 1996.
After a brief sabbatical, Fr. Keusal became Associate Pastor of St. Edna Parish in Arlington Heights in 1997. Between 1998 and 2001, he lived and served in three different parishes in Hawaii: St. Ann's, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Therese's. He retired in 2001, and was then named pastor emeritus at St. Mary Parish Fremont Center in Mundelein. (The church has since been rededicated St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish.)
Visitation for Fr. Keusal will take place from 3 to 9 p.m. on Monday September 11 at St. Mary of the Annunciation Church, 22333 West Erhart Road, Mundelein. Very Rev. Raymond Godert, retired auxiliary bishop of Chicago will be the main celebrant at a funeral Mass for Fr. Keusal, at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 12 at St. Mary of the Annunciation Church.
Interment will be at St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish Cemetery. Fr. Keusal is survived by a brother and sisters, including Sr. Mary Frances Keusal, S.P., a Minister of Care at St. James Church in Sauk Village.
