Ordained May 6, 1944

Chicago, IL, (July 5, 2008) Rev. Edward J. Brzozowski, pastor emeritus of St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish on Chicago’s southwest side, died on Wednesday, July 2, at age 89 at
St. Benedict Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Niles.

A Chicago native, Fr. Brzozowski was born on April 6, 1919, and was baptized at Immaculate Conception Church on the city’s southeast side.  Fr. Brzozowski graduated from Immaculate Conception Elementary School in June 1932, Quigley (North) Preparatory Seminary in June 1936 and the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary in May 1943.  He was fluent in the Polish language.

Fr. Brzozowski was ordained a priest on May 6, 1944, and the following day, celebrated his first solemn Mass at Immaculate Conception Church.  On June 3 of that year, he was named associate pastor of St. Mary Magdalene Parish on the city’s southeast side where he served until July 1953.  He was then assigned to St. Michael Parish on the city’s southeast side where he served until July 1961.  Fr. Brzozowski then became assistant pastor of St. Wenceslaus Parish on the city’s northwest side, where he served until June 1966. 

Fr. Brzozowski then served three years as assistant pastor of St. Florian Parish on the city’s southeast side, before being named pastor of Evanston’s Ascension of Our Lord Parish where he served until July 1972.  For the next ten years, Fr. Brzozowski served as pastor of St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish on the city’s southwest side, before retiring and being named pastor emeritus In August 1982.  Between 1979 and 1982, he also served the Archdiocese as Urban Vicar for Region IX.

Visitation for Fr. Brzozowski will be from 2 to 9 p.m. on Monday, July 7 at St. Andrew the Apostle Church, 768 Lincoln Ave. in south suburban Calumet City.  Most Rev. Timothy J. Lyne, Retired Bishop of Chicago, will celebrate a funeral Mass for Fr. Brzozowski at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 8 at St. Andrew the Apostle Church.  Most Rev.  Francis J. Kane, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago will be the homilist.  Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City.

Fr. Brzozowski is survived by his brother, Claude.
