Rev. Henry Michalek, Archdiocesan Priest, Dies
Ordained May 1, 1943

Chicago, IL (November 7, 2008) - Rev. Henry Michalek, pastor emeritus of St. William Parish in Chicago’s Montclare neighborhood, died on Tuesday, November 4, of heart failure at Resurrection Life Center in Chicago. He was 90 years old and was a resident of Resurrection Retirement Community at the time of his death.

A Chicago native, Fr. Michalek was born on May 29, 1918 and was baptized at the now-closed Polish parish of St. John of God on Chicago’s south side. Fluent in Polish, Fr. Michalek attended St. John of God Elementary School, Quigley (North) Preparatory Seminary, and the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary.

Fr. Michalek was ordained a priest on May 1, 1943 and the following day celebrated his first solemn Mass at St. John of God Church. On June 19 of that year, Fr. Michalek began a temporary, five-month assignment as associate pastor of St. Priscilla Parish in Chicago’s Dunning neighborhood. In October 1943, Fr. Michalek began a six-year assignment as associate pastor of the now-closed Slovenian parish of St. Stephen on the city’s west side. In July 1949, Fr. Michalek was named associate pastor of St. Helen Parish in the city’s West Town neighborhood, where he remained for eight years.

In July 1957, Fr. Michalek began a nine-year assignment as associate pastor of Five Holy Martyrs Parish in the city’s Brighton Park neighborhood. In June 1966, he became associate pastor of St. Joseph Parish in southwest suburban Summit. He remained there until April 1969, when he was named pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish on Chicago’s south side. He served there seven years before becoming pastor of St. William Parish in July 1976. He held this position for 12 years before retiring and becoming pastor emeritus in June 1988.

Visitation for Fr. Michalek will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, November 9, at St. William Church, 2600 N. Sayre Ave., Chicago. Fr. Michalek’s classmate, Most Rev. Timothy J. Lyne, Retired Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, will preside at a funeral Mass for Fr. Michalek at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 10, at St. William Church. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery in south suburban Justice.
