ARCHDIOCESAN PRIEST, REV. ERNEST D. CIEMIEGA, DIES
WAS PASTOR IN BLUE ISLAND
Chicago, IL (March 27, 2009) – Father Ernest D. Ciemiega, pastor emeritus of St. Isidore the Farmer Parish in Blue Island, died on Friday, March 27, 2009, at Holy Family Villa in Palos Park where he was residing. He was 79 years old.
A native of Chicago’s south side, Fr. Ciemiega was a graduate of Immaculate Conception / BVM elementary school, Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary, and the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary. He was ordained on May 3, 1957 by Samuel Cardinal Stritch.
Fr. Ciemiega’s first assignment in 1957 was at St. John Vianny Parish in Northlake, where he served as assistant pastor for five years. From 1962 to 1966, he was assistant pastor at St. Christina Parish in Chicago, before being named assistant pastor of St. John of God Parish, a south side parish now closed, where he served until 1969.
For five years beginning in 1969, Fr. Ciemiega was the assistant pastor of St. Stanislaus Bishop and Martyr Parish in Posen, and for the next five years, he served in the same capacity at St. Andrew Parish in Calumet City.
He was named pastor of Sacred Heart Parish on Honore Street (now closed) in 1979, serving there for three years. He served as associate pastor at St. Anastasia in Waukegan for one year (1983-84) and at St. Barbara Parish in Chicago for three years (1984-87).
Fr. Ciemiega became administrator and then pastor of St. Isidore the Farmer Parish in Blue Island, serving there from 1987 to 1994, when he became associate pastor of St. Bruno Parish on Chicago’s southwest side, where he served until 1998, when he retired from active ministry. He was named pastor emeritus of St. Isidore the Farmer that year.
Visitation for Fr. Ciemiega will take place on Sunday, March 29, from 2 until 9 p.m. at Wolniak Funeral Home, 5700 S. Pulaski Ave., Chicago. Fr. Ciemiega will be lying in state on Monday, March 30 from 2 until 9 p.m. at St. Bruno Church, 4751 S. Harding Ave. where a funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 31, at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City.
