REV. FRANCIS M. KAUCKY DIES
Was Southwest Suburban Pastor and Hospital Chaplain

Chicago, IL  (August 20, 2009) – Fr. Francis M. Kaucky, pastor emeritus of St. Fabian Parish in Bridgeview, died Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn.  He was 76 years old and was living in Tinley Park while serving as a weekend associate at St. Damian Parish in Oak Forest.
A Chicago native, Fr. Kaucky attended Nativity of Our Lord and St. Roman elementary schools before graduating from Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary and the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary.  He was ordained in 1959 by Albert Cardinal Meyer.

Fr. Kaucky served on Chicago’s north and west sides for ten years, first at St. Benedict Parish for six years and then at St. Leonard Parish in Berwyn before being assigned to the southwest suburbs.  He was the assistant pastor at St. Albert the Great in Oak Lawn from 1969 to 1973, at Our Lady of Loretto in Hometown from 1973 to 1979, and for a year at St. Francis Xavier in LaGrange before being named pastor of St. Fabian Parish in Bridgeview in 1980.  He served as pastor there for four years.

In 1985, Fr. Kaucky began nine years of service as chaplain at Palos Community Hospital in Palos Heights, while also serving as assistant pastor at St. Symphorosa Parish near Midway Airport.  Fr. Kaucky volunteered as a chaplain, and, according to Fr. Michael Meany, pastor of St. Damian Parish, he carried out this ministry with great care and concern.  “He listened very well to people,” Fr. Meany noted. “He was very empathetic and cared about the struggles of others and he took to heart what they told him,” Fr. Meany said.

For nine years beginning in 1994, Fr. Kaucky was the associate pastor at St. Damian Parish in Oak Forest.  Fr. Meany described his work there by saying, “He was genuine, prayerful and approachable, and the people loved him for that.  He loved being a priest, he loved the people, the administrative staff, and the youth with whom he served.” Fr. Meany also noted that Fr. Kaucky was a reflective person who often made silent retreats, but he also loved a good story and a good laugh.  Fr. Kaucky retired from active ministry in 2003 and was named pastor emeritus of St. Fabian Parish.
Visitation for Fr. Kaucky will take place Friday, August 21, from 3 to 9 p.m. and Saturday, August 22, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., at St. Damian Church, 5220 West 155th Street in Oak Forest.  Most Rev. Gustavo Garcia-Siller, MSpS, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, will be the main celebrant at a funeral Mass for Fr. Kaucky at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, at St. Damian Church.  Interment will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Evergreen Park.
Fr. Kaucky is survived by three brothers: Charles Jr., Edward and John Kaucky, and a sister, Catherine Miller.
