REV. MARTIN R. BOROWCZYK, DIES
Pastor Emeritus of St. Constance Parish
Chicago, IL (July 26, 2010) – Fr. Martin Borowczyk, pastor emeritus of St. Constance Parish on Chicago’s northwest side, died Saturday, July 24, at St. Benedict Home in Niles where he was residing. He was 93 years old and had been a priest for 68 years.
Fr. Borowczyk was born in Cicero and graduated from St. Mary’s School there and from Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary and the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary. He was ordained by Archbishop Samuel Stritch (later Samuel Cardinal Stritch) in 1942 and began his first assignment as assistant pastor at St. Turibius Parish near Midway Airport, where he served for six years.
From 1946 to 1955, he was a member of the Polish Mission Band, and also served the residents of Rosary Hill Center in Justice, where he resided. From 1955 to 1961, Fr. Borowczyk served in two parishes on Chicago’s northwest side, St. Ferdinand (1955-58) and St. Sylvester (1958-61) before taking on assignments in the western suburbs. During his tenure at St. Sylvester, Fr. Borowczyk taught modern languages at Mundelein Seminary.
From 1961 to 1967, Fr. Borowczyk was the assistant pastor at St. John of the Cross Parish in Western Springs, and for one year following that he was the assistant pastor at St. Eulalia in Maywood. For seven months between April 1968 and November 1969, Fr. Borowczyk served twice at St. Symphorosa Parish as temporary assistant pastor, and also at St. Valentine Parish in Cicero, which is now closed. From 1967 to 1969, he was a member of the Personnel Board of the Archdiocese.
Fr. Borowczyk was named pastor of St. Constance Parish on the northwest side in late 1969 and served as pastor there for 19 years, until his retirement from active ministry in 1987.
Visitation for Fr. Borowczyk will take place from 3 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 27, at St. Constance Church, 5843 West Strong Street in Chicago. Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago, will be the main celebrant at a funeral Mass for Fr. Borowczyk at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 28, at St. Constance. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Justice. Fr. Borowczyk is survived by his sister, Therese Wojcik, two sisters-in-law, Josephine and Marie, and many nieces and nephews.
