ARCHDIOCESAN PRIEST, REV. JOSEPH W. SEITZ, DIES
Pastor Emeritus of Christ the King Parish in Chicago
Chicago, IL (May 15, 2012) – Fr. Joseph W. Seitz, died on Sunday, May 13, at Holy Family Villa in Palos Heights. He was 82 years old.
Fr. Seitz was born in Chicago and attended Christ the King Catholic School. He graduated from Quigley Preparatory Seminary and from the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary. Samuel Cardinal Stritch ordained Fr. Seitz on April 12, 1958.
From 1958 to 1966, Fr. Seitz served as assistant pastor at St. Benedict Parish in Blue Island. He then served as assistant pastor at St. Raphael Parish on Laflin Street in Chicago until 1972 when he was named administrator. In 1974, Fr. Seitz served as pastor of St. Raphael until its closing in 1989. He was then named associate pastor of St. Benedict the African-East Parish where he served until 1990.
From 1990 until 1998, Fr. Seitz served as pastor of Christ the King Parish on 93rd Street in Chicago and has been pastor emeritus since 1998. In retirement he served as Chaplain at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park and St. Mary Cemetery as well as visiting priest at St. Bernadette, St. Cajetan, St. Bede, St. Walter and numerous south side parishes.
Visitation for Fr. Seitz will take place from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 17, at Christ the King Parish, 9235 South Hamilton in Chicago. Retired Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, Most Rev. John R. Gorman, will be the main celebrant at a funeral Mass for Fr. Seitz at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 18, at Christ the King Parish. Msgr. Patrick Pollard, director of Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese, will be the homilist. Interment will be at St. Mary Cemetery in Evergreen Park.
Fr. Seitz is survived by his brother, Gerald, nieces, Kathleen Seitz, Margaret Seitz and Elizabeth O’Connor, and a nephew, Mark Seitz.
