ARCHDIOCESAN PRIEST, REV. ROBERT J. NOVAK, DIES
CHICAGO (September 13, 2013) – Rev. Robert J. Novak, a retired priest of the Archdiocese, died Wednesday, September 11, at Addolorata Villa in Wheeling, where he was a resident. Fr. Novak was 96 years old and a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago for 71 years. He had been retired since 1982.
Fr. Novak was born in Chicago on February 4, 1917. He graduated from St. Mel Catholic School, Quigley Preparatory Seminary and the University of Saint Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary. He was ordained by Cardinal Stritch in 1942.
Fr. Novak’s first assignment was as assistant pastor of St. Leonard Parish in Berwyn. He served there for seven years. From 1949 to 1957, Fr. Novak was assistant pastor of St. Hilary Parish on Chicago’s north side. For eight years, beginning in 1957, he was assistant pastor of St. Leo Parish, which closed in 2002.
In 1966, Fr. Novak was named chaplain for the former St. Therese Hospital in Waukegan. He served in that capacity until 1975, when health issues forced him to take medical leave. He retired from active ministry in 1982.
Visitation for Fr. Novak will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, September 13, at Addolorata Villa, 555 McHenry Road in Wheeling. Fr. Tony Ong, chaplain at Addolorata Villa, will be the main celebrant of the funeral Mass for Fr. Novak at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 14, at
Addolorata Villa. Visitation will take place from 9 a.m. until the start of Mass.
Interment at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside is private. Fr. Novak is survived by several nieces and nephews, and great and great-grand nieces and nephews.
