Pastor Emeritus of St. Symphorosa Parish in Chicago

Chicago, IL (December 9, 2013) – Reverend Monsignor Francis N. Maniola, died on Friday, December 6, 2013, at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn.  He was 100 years old.

Msgr. Maniola was born in Chicago and attended several Chicago public elementary schools.  He graduated from Maternity B.V.M. School, Quigley Preparatory Seminary and from the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary.  George Cardinal Mundelein ordained Msgr. Maniola on April 23, 1938.  He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from St. Mary of the Lake, attended the University of Notre Dame for post graduate study, and received an M.A. degree from Loyola University Chicago.  His first assignment was on the faculty of Quigley Preparatory Seminary where he taught for 27 years while being a Resident at several Chicago parishes including St. Agatha Parish from 1940 to 1951, Christ the King Parish from 1951 to 1957, Presentation BVM Parish from 1957 to 1960, and Queen of Angels Parish from 1960 to 1966.

Msgr. Maniola was Administrator of St. Symphorosa Parish in Chicago and Assistant Pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish from 1966 until 1968.  He was named pastor of St. Symphorosa in 1968 and remained in that role until 1981 when he was made Pastor Emeritus.

When asked about Msgr. Maniola’s life of priestly service, Margaret Garbacz, the Pastoral Associate and Director of Religious Education for St. Symphorosa Parish said, “Msgr. Maniola was the pillar of our parish and we cannot begin to imagine how St. Symphorosa will go on without him.”  When asked what Msgr. Maniola will be remembered for, Garbacz responded, “For his love.  His love of teaching, his love for his parish and his people.”

Visitation for Msgr. Maniola will take place from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., on Tuesday, December 10, at Central Chapel, 6158 South Central Avenue in Chicago.  Msgr. Maniola will be Lying in State on Wednesday, December 11, from 3 to 9 p.m., at St. Symphorosa Church, 6135 South Austin Avenue in Chicago.  A Liturgical Wake Service will be held at 7 p.m. in the Church.

Most Rev. Francis J. Kane, Auxiliary Bishop and Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Chicago, will be the main celebrant of the funeral Mass for Msgr. Maniola on Thursday, December 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Symphorosa Parish.  Concelebrants will include Most. Rev. Andrew P. Wypych, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, Rev. Thaddeus J. Bojczuk, pastor of St. Symphorosa Parish and Rev. Norman J. Trela, Senior Priest at St. Symphorosa.  Msgr. John P. McNamara  will be the homilist.  Interment will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in River Grove.

Msgr. Maniola is survived by his sister, Rosemary Boyle and 72 nieces and nephews spanning four generations.
