ARCHDIOCESAN PRIEST, REV. JOHN J. GRACE, DIES
Pastor Emeritus of St. Tarcissus Parish in Chicago

Chicago, IL (January 9, 2014) – Rev. John J. Grace died on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.  He was 89 years old.

Fr. Grace was born in Chicago and attended St. Andrew School in Chicago.  He graduated from Quigley Preparatory Seminary and from the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary.  He received his Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Sacred Theology, Master of Arts and Licentiate of Sacred Theology degrees from St. Mary of the Lake. Samuel Cardinal Stritch ordained Fr. Grace on May 3, 1950.

His first assignment was at Visitation Parish in Chicago where he served as assistant pastor from 1950 to 1960.  He also served in three other parishes as assistant pastor:  St. Mary Parish in Des Plaines from 1960 to 1965; Old St. Patrick Parish in Chicago from 1965 to 1969; and St. Ludmilla Parish in Chicago beginning in 1969 when he was also named Administrator.  He served in this capacity at St. Ludmilla until 1974 when he was named pastor.

In 1983, Fr. Grace was assigned to St. Tarcissus Parish in Chicago where he served until his retirement in July 2000 when he was named Pastor Emeritus.  Fr. Grace was appointed as Co-Director of the Missions Office, formerly the Office for the Propagation of the Faith, from 1993 to 1996, and served in this capacity concurrently with his term as pastor and after his retirement.

Diane Bower, Fr. Grace’s niece-in-law said, “Fr. Grace loved people and people loved him. He was an example of Catholic charity for everyone who had the good fortune to meet him. We considered ourselves fortunate to call him ‘Father’.”

Fr. Grace will be lying in State from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Friday, January 10, at St. Tarcissus Parish, 6020 West Ardmore Avenue in Chicago. Visitation for Fr. Grace will take place at 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Tarcissus Parish before the funeral Mass. Most Reverend Francis J. Kane, Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago and Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Chicago, will be the main celebrant and homilist at the funeral Mass for Fr. Grace at 11 a.m., also at St. Tarcissus Parish. Interment will be at All Saints Cemetery in Des Plaines.

Fr. Grace is survived by his nieces and nephews.
