Statement of Archbishop Blase Cupich on the Death of Metropolitan Iakovos
The Christian community in the United States has lost a faithful bishop, His Eminence, Metropolitan Iakovos, the late Metropolitan of Chicago.
Metropolitan Iakovos was the leader of the Greek Orthodox Church in six Midwestern states, and a well-respected member of the Council of Religious Leaders of Metropolitan Chicago, an interfaith organization.
The close relationship between the Archdiocese of Chicago and the Greek Metropolis of Chicago developed through the efforts of Metropolitan Iakovos and my three predecessors, beginning during the earliest days of his episcopate in Chicago. May our two dioceses continue to collaborate and work on joint initiatives to assist our communities.
May His Eminence, Metropolitan Iakovos of Chicago rest in peace.
