Last Sunday, just as police officers in Dallas were laid to rest, targeted for making their vocation the keeping of peace, we were shocked to learn this horror had been repeated in Baton Rouge. These outrages deserve every condemnation. Admittedly, we need a national conversation about the complex issues that must be addressed if we are to break this cycle of violence and restore peace, security and justice in our streets. But, today, these fallen public servants and all those who loved them deserve our consoling support. Each day, the brave Americans, who answer the call to protect and serve, leave their families to keep our families safe. Heartbreakingly, the worst nightmare of all police families was experienced by the loved ones of these slain officers. We mourn with them. These times test our highest principles, as Americans, as believers. But we have been tested before. And we will be again. Passing such trials will require us to hold fast to our values of peace, tolerance, liberty, equality, and love of neighbor—the very values perpetrators of violence seek to undermine. We must not allow them to succeed. We must not allow them to divide us. The best way to start is by standing shoulder to shoulder with those who mourn these public servants, who left their homes that tragic morning just to keep the peace and keep us safe.
