Statement of Cardinal Blase J. Cupich on the Attack at a Hanukkah Celebration in Monsey, NY

Dec. 30, 2019
Together with the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago and all people of good will, I mourn and pray for the victims of the horrific stabbings at the home of a Jewish family during a Hanukkah celebration Saturday night in Monsey, NY. This is another in a string of attacks against Jewish people in the New York region and around the world — one of which occurred when an assailant stabbed a man walking to synagogue in Monsey just last month. These heinous acts of violence against Jewish people must be condemned in the strongest terms. As Pope Francis put it during a November 13 address: “In the last century we saw so many brutalities against the Jewish people, and we were all convinced that this was over. But today the habit of persecuting the Jews, brothers and sisters, is here reborn. This is neither human nor Christian.”
