Spelman College Glee Club to Debut Original Mass Music for St. Benedict the African Parish on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 1 p.m.
Chicago, IL (April 11, 2018) – In honor of the Feast Day of St. Benedict the Moor, members of Spelman College’s Glee Club will debut original compositions of sacred music on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 1 p.m., at St. Benedict the African Parish, 340 West 66th Street, Chicago. The parish commissioned Dr. Kevin Johnson, associate professor of Music at Spelman College and director of the Spelman College Glee Club, to compose a soulful style of African American musical arrangements that commemorate the season of Easter. This special performance is part of the Archdiocese’s peace-building and violence-prevention efforts.
“In this Easter season, we are reminded of our Christian duty to promote peace,” said Reverend David Jones, pastor of St. Benedict the African Parish. “The Mass of St. Benedict reflects the parish's commitment to unite the faithful of Englewood and strengthen the resolve of the community believing that change, justice and non-violence start in the Church and are led out by the Church.”
Liturgical music is an important part of a Mass as it enhances and connects parishioners to the celebration of worship. Each piece of music performed at the event will be introduced by the composer to give context regarding the creative process used in developing the piece. As parishioners of St. Benedict and other special guests invoke this sacred music, they will recommit themselves to prayer and humble service.
The Spelman College Glee Club, part of Spelman College, a historically Black liberal arts women's college in Atlanta, has been recognized for its choral excellence since 1925. Its repertoire includes sacred and secular selections with special emphasis on traditional spirituals, music by African-American composers, music from many cultures and commissioned works.
Led by Dr. Johnson, who has a long and distinguished history as liturgist and church musician primarily in the Catholic Church, the choral group has traveled throughout the United States and performed for a variety of audiences. Past performances include concert halls, such as Fanueil Hall in Boston, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center and churches, high schools, colleges, and universities nationwide.
