January 24, 2019

As part of the Archdiocese of Chicago’s revitalization initiative, Renew My Church, the leadership of parishes in the Little Italy and South Holland groupings have been meeting to discuss the future church, parish and school structures for their respective areas. They submitted their feedback to the Archdiocese of Chicago and the following decisions have been approved.

Little Italy Renew My Church Grouping

The Little Italy Renew My Church grouping, includes the following, all of which are located in Chicago:

  • Holy Family Parish
  • Notre Dame de Chicago Parish
  • Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii
  • University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) Newman Center
  • Children of Peace School

Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, the auxiliary bishop and the archdiocese’s Presbyteral Council met and, based on feedback from the archdiocesan Renew My Church Commission and other considerations, the Cardinal made the following decisions regarding the grouping’s structure.

Holy Family Parish and Notre Dame de Chicago Parish will unite to form one, new parish, effective July 1, 2019. The new parish will be located at Notre Dame de Chicago Church. As Holy Family Church and property are owned by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), any Masses and celebration of sacraments at Holy Family Church after July 1, 2019 will be decided upon collaboratively with leadership of the new parish and the Jesuit community. The life of the new parish and regular Masses will take place at Notre Dame de Chicago Church.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii and UIC Newman Center will continue operating in their current structures.

Children of Peace School will remain in its current structure with no changes. School leadership, in coordination with the archdiocese, will continue to set annual fundraising and enrollment targets for improvement.

Over the next few months, the archdiocese will work with the faith communities of Holy Family and Notre Dame de Chicago to ensure an orderly and smooth transition to the new structure. The archdiocese’s Priest Placement Board will work with both communities to identify a pastor to lead the new parish, which will include a joint consultation involving the parishioners of both parishes in the coming months to identify the gifts and characteristics needed for the pastor.

South Holland Renew My Church Grouping

The South Holland Renew My Church grouping, includes the following:

  • Holy Ghost Parish (South Holland)
  • St. Jude the Apostle Parish (South Holland)
  • St. Mary Queen of Apostles Parish (Riverdale)
  • Christ Our Savior School (South Holland)

Holy Ghost Parish, St. Jude the Apostle Parish and St. Mary Queen of Apostles Parish will unite to form one, new parish effective July 1, 2019. Holy Ghost and St. Mary Queen of Apostles Churches will close, with final Masses celebrated at each church no later than June 30, 2020.

Christ Our Savior School will continue in its current structure with no changes.

Over the next few months, the archdiocese will work with the faith communities to ensure an orderly and smooth transition to the new structure. The archdiocese’s Priest Placement Board will work with the communities to identify a pastor to lead the new parish, which will include a joint consultation involving the parishioners of all three current parishes in the coming months to identify the gifts and characteristics needed for the pastor of the new, unified parish.
