Chicago, IL (Sept. 24, 2019) - St. Joseph Parish, 4821 South Hermitage Ave. in Chicago, will welcome a statue of Our Lady of San Juan de Los Lagos with a procession through the Back of the Yards neighborhood on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. As part of the celebration, the statue of Our Lady of San Juan de Los Lagos, from the city of San Juan de los Lagos, Jalisco, Mexico, will join her "sister" statue of Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Talpa. During the celebration of the 130th anniversary of the parish in 2017, the Pastor of the Basilica of Talpa, gave the Chicago church a replica of the Virgen de Talpa.

On Saturday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m., there will be a special outdoor Mass at 48th and Bishop in the Hamline Elementary School parking lot, to remember victims of violence in the community and to strengthen the message of peace.  On Sunday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m., Bishop Robert G. Casey will celebrate a Mass that will include the official enthronement/installation of Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Talpa. The statue will be on permanent display for devoted Catholics to visit any time, especially in these times of despair with mass shootings throughout the United States and the immigration issues many local families face.

About the Virgen de Talpa

The Virgen de Talpa is a 16th-century statue enshrined in the basilica of a mining town founded in 1599, Talpa de Allende, Jalisco. The 16-inche-high image was originally made of pasta de cana (cornstalk paste) and represents the Virgin of the Rosary. According to legend, in September 1644, finding her image in a lamentable state of deterioration, the Virgen de Talpa miraculously transformed herself into wood.  According to the Basilica of Talpa, the statue in Chicago is the only replica of the Virgin outside of Mexico.
