Parishes and Schools Across the Archdiocese of Chicago to Celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Wednesday, Dec. 11 and Thursday, Dec. 12

Activities to include Masses, dances, tributes, a dramatization of the appearance of Our Lady to San Juan Diego, Holy Hour and Mass of the Roses

Chicago, IL (Dec. 11, 2019) - Parishes and Schools across the archdiocese of Chicago will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Wednesday, Dec. 11 and Thursday, Dec. 12. This year marks the 488th anniversary of the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, when Hispanic Catholics and other groups celebrate the Virgin Mary’s multiple appearances to St. Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin, an Aztec who converted to Catholicism.

Between Dec. 9 and 12, 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego several times, including when she asked him to carry a message to the Archbishop of Mexico City. She asked that a church be built in her honor and, despite the wintry weather, filled his cloak with roses and emblazoned her image upon it. This garment is now on display in Mexico City’s Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe and attracts millions of pilgrims each year.

During this time, in addition to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines, Ill., many parishes and schools of the Archdiocese of Chicago celebrate the feast day with special Masses and offer other activities for the devoted throughout the day.

The following list represents a sample of parishes and schools celebrating special masses, rosaries, plays and other activities in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
